Lidl Starts Selling Smartphones

Following in Aldi’s Shoes, German discounter Lidl is also starting to sell off cheap Android-based smartphones. While Aldi launched the Wolfgang brand to promote their line-up of mobile devices, Lidle isn’t taking that route. Instead, the company is offering the smartphones under the name of their manufacturer. Huawei.

Motorola Sales Plunge, Again

In the past quarter, Motorola Mobility has sold 8.9 million mobile devices. The sales took another dive. In the same quarter of 2011, Motorola Mobility sold 9.2 million devices. Though sales are down again, Motorola did record an increase in smartphone sales.

First Intel Smartphone Ready for Launch

Intel-ceo Paul Otellini announced that the first smartphone running on an Intel based SoC is ready to launch next week. The device is probably coming from India based vendor Lava.

Samsung Will launch a Windows 8 Phone in 2012

Samsung has announced it will be delivering the first smartphone based on Windows 8 by the end of the year. The Thai branch of Samsung brought the news to a local website called ePrice.

Motorola to Develop Android on DECT Phones

We have seen many Motorola DECT phones on the market. Most of them have been made under license of Motorola resulting in poor build quality. According to the latest FCC filings, this is about to change.

Nielsen: 49,7% of US Subs own a Smartphone

As of February, Nielsen reports that nearly half of the US residents with a mobile contract own a smartphone. In February 2011, the percentage of smartphone owners was just 36%.

Dutch Operator Launches its own Android

Dutch operator KPN has announced the launch of the new Smart 200 device. The Smart 200 is a new Android phone developed specially for the Dutch operator to cater to smartphone-unaware consumers.

ComScore: US Smartphone Userbase Increased With 60%

Android 3.0 Compatible with Smartphones

While the general understanding is that Android 2.4 will be the next smartphone OS and Android 3.0 will focus on Tablet releases, it turns out the Android 3.0 SDK does have smartphone features on board.
