Symbian’s 100.000.000 milestone

Symbian announced to have a massive 100 million Symbian supporting devices in the market of which 13 million where sold in the last quarter. Symbian started in 2000 with the Ericsson A830. Currently Ericsson is joined by nine other vendors and those are backed by 250 operators world wide.

Technically speaking surely 100m Symbian devices have been sold since the Ericsson R380 (not sure I’ve heard of the A830) – of which significantly fewer are still being used in the marketplace. Impressive figures but subtly different meaning!
It would be interesting to know how many of these are open Symbian vs closed (like DoCoMo’s), a common misconception in the West is that all Symbian == smartphone… but this is a side issue of course…

According to Nigel Clifford, the symbian president the success of their smartphone operating system lies in the efforts of the phone manufacturers who embraced the symbian OS for their phones.
