Nielsen: iTunes Best and Windows Marketplace Worst App Store

March 29th, 2010 by Arjan Olsder Posted in Research & Stats | No Comments »

Nielsen Nielsen has surveyed 4.000 consumers about their usage of app stores. The survey shows that consumers are very satisfied about Apple, but are less happy with Microsoft’s efforts.

Nielsen released a lot of information on the app store and app usage of the consumers they surveyed. For example, iPhone OS users have the most apps installed with a 37 apps average. Second place goes to Android with 22% and third place goes to Palm at 14% (not counting ‘other’ as a single OS).

Apps-per-device

Smartphone users are much more active when it comes to downloading apps. Only 12% of the feature phone owners downloaded an app in the past 30 days compared to 46% of the smartphone owners. These smartphone downloads have mainly been driven by iPhone and Android owners, probably due to the huge offering on these platforms.

Trended-app-store

When looking at the individual app stores (not limiting ourselves to vendor stores), BlackBerry is one of the main competitors to Apple. 16% of the consumers used BlackBerry App World compared to 25% who used the App Store from Apple. Verizon takes third place with 15% and is the most popular carrier channel in the US.

Appstore-usage

Apple still beats Android when looking at user satisfaction, but the difference between both is very slim. This is interesting since developers have been complaining about Android Market’s marketing possibilities since it launched. Windows Marketplace has the lowest number of satisfied clients.
