February 28th, 2012 by Arjan Olsder Posted in Platforms: AndroidOS | No Comments »

During the Mobile World Congress, Google’s Andy Rubin gave some insights as to how the Android platform is performing. Currently, Google is activating 850,000 new Android phones a day.

With 850,000 activations a day, Android is outgrowing iOS as Apple is activating an estimated 535,000 devices a day. In total, there are over 300,000,000 Android-based devices on the market today. 12,000,000 of those are tablets.

Google grows about 250% year-on-year. This reflects in the number of daily activations over time. In August 2010, Google activated 200,000 devices a day. In June 2011, this number already went up to 500,000 daily activations. During the last holiday season alone, Google activated 3,700,000 new devices.

The Android platform is not the only thing that’s growing fast. The Android Market is filling up fast as well. Last year, Google announced to have 150,000 apps online. This year, Android Market holds 450,000 apps. In total, all Android users have downloaded a billion apps from Android Market.
