Pocket Gamer has an interesting rumour on their website. It seems that SonyEricsson has made a deal with GestureTek in order to use their technologies to enable motion gaming on older handsets.
Though we are currently waiting for a SonyEricsson W760 with the official motion gaming technology on board, which should arrive along next week, this deal could mean a break through for motion gaming on behalf of SonyEricsson.
Recently we already showed a GestureTek demo as well as a motion sensor based mobile game on MGB-TV. The technology looks awesome to us and allows a huge amount of new creative mobile games to enter the market.
SonyEricsson has always been a front-runner with introducing new technologies for mobile game development. The big problem however has always been adoption. Developers need to port their games to huge numbers of handsets in order to make the game profitable and interesting to operators and big portals.
By introducing GestureTek’s technology, SonyEricsson enables older handsets to also have motion gaming on board as well. Of course, using the camera will probably consume part of the available memory and might also cause a bit of lag depending on the processing power of the device in question. However this deal is still pretty cool and will probably trigger the imagination of developers world-wide.
According to Pocket Gamer, special versions of Crash Bandicoot and Super Monkeyball have already been announced. The full PocketGamer editorial can be found here.
