One of the stranger announcements at CES 2009 came from Microsoft. At the event, the company announced that it would aim at less new Windows Mobile device releases along 2009.
This is a strange move as the company is in heavy competition with both Symbian S60 from Nokia and AndroidOS from Google. Both keep gaining popularity amongst consumers.
By limiting the number of phones that hit the market with the Windows Mobile operating system, Microsoft hopes that manufacturers will spend more time to optimize the hardware / software combination in order to enrich the experience. Through this move, it should become more easy for mobile game developers to get their games working on all the latest devices.
On a side note, Microsoft announced that it is still planning to launch an app store like channel for developers.
