Yesterday, Apple released not only the new iPhone firmware, but also the new iTunes 9. We downloaded it right away and found out that there is a sweet surprise for iPhone publishers in it.
Next to the top charts for the paid and free categories, iTunes now also packs a chart based on revenues. For our local chart, the leader at the moment is TomTom Western Europe followed by all sorts of navigation below it. Spots 7, 8 and 9 are taken by games though (Need for Speed, Modern Combat and Tetris). With this chart, Apple will give publishers a new way to get promotion on their game, but the focus will be much more on value for money then download popularity.

I can’t believe how many developers are excited about the revenue chart when it all it really offers is a resort of the top 100 list.
In exchange for that iTunes 9 removed the app promotion on the home page of the store, the What’s New, What’s Hot, and Staff Favorites pods in the games section, and the ability to browse the game subcategories.
They’ve improved visibility for people selling 1000s of apps a day and have hindered visibility for game developers selling < 100 a day. This change is only really good for EA, Activision, Gameloft, and TomTom.
