MeeGo is a mix of Nokia’s new Maemo platform with Intel’s Moblin. This Linux based OS will be installed on devices from both vendors like Phones, Netbooks, Connected TV’s, In-Car systems and much more.
With the introduction of yet another OS, Nokia and Intel hope to reduce fragmentation in the industry. For development, the companies will utilize Nokia’s QT IDE. This means most Maemo software should be compatible with the platform. Next to Nokia’s Ovi store, Intel will sell MeeGo applications as well on their AppUpSM Center.
To increase the lifespan of this new OS, the companies will make it available to other hardware vendors as well. At the same time, Nokia also informed the public that Maemo will not be the end of Symbian (which is not in-line with lowering fragmentation).
Find more information at the MeeGo website. We will be renaming out Maemo category to MeeGo.
