Id’s John Carmack has ported the good old, original, Wolfenstein to the iPhone platform. At the same time, the developer has started providing the source code of the game for free on it’s website.
Together with the source code, Carmack has also made available a huge developer diary in which he outlines the problems he came across as well as his fascination for the platform.
“Wolfenstein was originally written in Borland C and TASM for DOS, but I had open sourced the code long ago, and there were several projects that had updated the original code to work on OpenGL and modern operating systems. After a little looking around, I found Wolf3D Redux at http://wolf3dredux.sourceforge.net/. One of the development comments about "removal of the gangrenous 16 bit code" made me smile.”
For now, there is no planned release date for the title on the App Store (though it will come), so you are stuck to jailbreak your iPhone (you also need a compiler) if you want to play one of the most popular
shooters from the nineties.
