According to rumors, Google has plans to split Android up. That way, consumers can get access to API’s of future Android versions without having to wait for vendors and operators to make new firmware available.
The Android OS parts would be distributed over the Android Market and are likely to be available as free downloads. The first updated would be titles Froyo and Gingerbread.
