Though Brew has always been a strong platform in the US, the platform never reached a substantial marketshare in markets like Europe and Asia. With the new BrewMP platform, that might change.
BrewMP is a smartphone OS aimed at low cost hardware (what used to be feature or dumb phones). By aiming at low cost hardware, Qualcomm hopes to gain market share in markets like India and China where consumers can’t spend much on a smartphone. If the company succeeds, BrewMP might become one of the more important platforms in game development again.
To make development for BrewMP easy, Qualcomm seems to have created a developer friendly ecosystem. The device will accept games and applications written in Java as well as Flash and C/C++. The devices will also be able to display 3D graphics through the implementation of OpenGL ES 2.0.
