Flurry: iPod Touch Shows Success

December 7th, 2009 by Arjan Olsder Posted in Platforms: AndroidOS, Platforms: iOS, Research & Stats | No Comments »

Flurry Flurry has released some new demographics on the popularity of the iPhone, iPod Touch and Android devices. To their surprise, it seems the iPod Touch is expanding its reach.

According to Apple, 58 Million iPhone OS devices have been sold till September. Flurry calculated that only 40% (24 Million) of them are actual iPhones. The rest is made up by the iPod Touch. Flurry feels that the iPod Touch is the training school of future iPhone clients as they are probably owned by kids. Those kids will already know the interface of the iPhone OS and have made several purchases before they have the right age to purchase an actual iPhone.

To support the theory of the importance of the iPod Touch, the company tracked user sessions by device over Android, iPhone and the iPod Touch. Along June, the iPhone attracted 75% of the gaming sessions and the iPod Touch 31%. In November, the iPhone attracted 50% and the iPod Touch 35%. This is growth for the iPod while the iPhone is giving market share away.

At the same time, Android grew from 10% to 14%. This might mean that the Motorola Droid has been responsible for taming away at least some share of the iPhone users.

Flurry also checked the sessions in the social networking and gaming categories and spotted the iPod Touch willing terrain over the iPhone there as well.
