F8: Facebook to Introduce Own Virtual Currency

April 23rd, 2010 by Arjan Olsder Posted in Platforms: Facebook | No Comments »

At the F8 conference, Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg has announced that the company is nearly ready with their Facebook Credits system. The system enables developers to use an uniform currency in their facebook connected games.

Facebook users will be able to link their facebook accounts with their bank accounts in order to buy facebook credits. This is a onetime process which should ease the payment process in any game. The current version of Facebook Credits is already in Beta testing in over 100 Facebook apps.

Developers that will use the Facebook currency will have to split it 70:30 with Facebook. It is unknown at the time if facebook connected apps on mobile phones will also be allowed to use the system which could potentially make it a multi-platform currency.
