Experts on Operators and Their App Stores

May 12th, 2009 by Arjan Olsder Posted in Analysis & Editorial | No Comments »

Hungrymobile Last week, Opinions in Mobile posted an interesting question toward their expert panel; Do you think operators will fight back in APPSTORES and bring a competing proposition, what is your view on them succeeding?

From the panel, six experts (under who, me) responded to the question with their own views. One of the views is that of Lawrence Cosh-Ishii, co-founder of Wireless Watch in Japan: He explains that the model is not that new.

“Japanese operators have been very successful with the app store model since launch in 1999, all offer a very generous 90/10 revenue share to CP's, with imode alone showing well over 10,000 unique official content providers at last count. The recent push by certain handset makers and OS platforms to build dedicated app stores would reasonably indicate they recognize a void, therefore opportunity, in the standard existing global operator model. Will there be a competing propositions, no doubt, who will win.. Hopefully the consumer!”
