An interesting twist to the Worms license today as EA announced to have acquired the license from Team 17 and THQ Wireless, a deal that was first rumored back in April 2009.
With the deal, EA acquired one of the industry’s evergreens as Worms has been a success on pretty much every mobile platform to date. In fact, with this mobile release, Team 17 is also celebrating the 15th birthday of the Worms brand.
The press release also has an interesting mention. As of now, EA also has ownership over Worms 2008, Worms 2007, Worms Forts 3D, Worms Crazy Golf and Worms 2, all games developed under THQ Wireless. Team 17 will retain the rights to the iPhone themselves.
“At EA Mobile we are great fans of the Worms series and are pleased to be able to expand the hugely successful franchise with new exciting content as seen in the all new WORMS, and make it available to a larger fan base around the world through more channels and in more countries than ever before.” said Luca Pagano, Vice President, Publishing, EA Mobile.
Adds Team 17 Joint CEO Debbie Bestwick “As the market leader in mobile gaming, EA Mobile’s reach and breadth of partner relationships will massively help Worms’ positioning and greatly increase appeal to a new generation of mobile gamers.”
