Distimo: Android Leads in Free Apps

July 2nd, 2010 by Arjan Olsder Posted in Research & Stats | No Comments »

Distimo launched a new report in which the company outlines the free (or freemium) mobile apps market. Android is a clear leader in the field with 57% of Android apps being free to download.

The worst platform for free content is Windows Marketplace (22%), followed closely by iPad (23%). Palm also scores well with 34% of apps being free in the App Catalogue. One of the reasons why Android Market is swamped by free content is because developers have problems charging money in 13 of the 46 countries while consumers are still not welcoming Google’s Checkout service.

When taking a peek at paid content, BlackBerry App World is the most expensive sales channel ($6,97 average) followed by Windows Marketplace ($5,96). With an average price of $2,45, Palm is the cheapest but we are not sure if Palm’s half-price promotion is included in this number.
