After Infusio’s ExEn and Blaze’s Mophun, a new player enters the market with their technology. Intent’s Gameplayer sits around the OS and allows content in their native language and J2me. Visit their site for more details.

The Zune phone

September 18th, 2006 by Arjan Olsder Posted in Smartphones & Tablets | No Comments »

Microsoft plans ahead of Apple as they announced to release a Zune Phone. They didn’t really have more details yet, but it’s to be expected to be a phone aimed at playing music and watching movies. I wonder how much different it will be from a general Windows Mobile device.

New rumors, the Playstation phone!?

September 11th, 2006 by Arjan Olsder Posted in Smartphones & Tablets | No Comments »

It’s not unthinkable and Izumi Kawanishi from SCE won’t even deny it, even better, it’s an interesting idea! So far we have seen rumors throughout the mobile industry of Apple popping up with their iPhone or whatever it will be called. Sony, who of course can utilize it’s SonyEricsson VC for such an action has never really been looked at though, so the guys at IGN just had to pop the question. The only disturbing fact about his remarks is that Izumi looks at the PSP for phone features. As we all know this device would actually lack the support for GSM or CDMA networks and a handy way of inserting phone numbers which means the PSP probably has to be refitted with a touch screen and another internal antenna / sim card holder. Coming back to SonyEricsson and it’s remarketing of the Walkman brand, it seems more logical to refit a phone with the Playstation brand. SonyEricsson’s SVP Rikko Sakaguchi also helps to fuel the rumors by announcing the company is working on something. These facts where put in place by MobileMentalism.

Nokia ditches the numbers

September 11th, 2006 by Arjan Olsder Posted in Smartphones & Tablets | No Comments »

A new time is rising for Nokia‘s marketing department as they decided to change their classical phone titles, which where numbers, for real titles. Though Nokia is one of the last to start this way of marketing, they are confident they can still benefit from it as it’s easier to create a brand from a phone’s title then just a number. As an example, this can be compared to Motorola which did excellent marketing around their RAZR models.

The 1 Million Euro phone

September 6th, 2006 by Arjan Olsder Posted in Smartphones & Tablets | No Comments »

Miljoen_mobieltje402 I don’t know if it plays games what makes this post totally unrelated to the blog, but we have a new record when it comes to expensive designer phones. Swiss based firm Goldvish announced it has sold it’s newest designer phone in Cannes to a Russian real estate tycoon. The phone is made from massive gold, so probably it has also managed to pull in the world record for being most heavy. Furthermore it holds 1800 diamonds of 120 carat.

Activating the remaining 90% with pets?

September 5th, 2006 by Arjan Olsder Posted in Smartphones & Tablets | No Comments »

Ok, let’s not start by saying this is typical a American thing and this story can even be considered a bit off topic, but still I think it’s nice to mention that we have a new consumer in our market. It’s our beloved pet according to PetsCell! These guys made mobile phones so people can talk to their dogs over a larger distance. Also handy, it has a GPS unit so you know where the little critter hangs out. Now that last thing might sound handy to find it back, but what about a nice real life hunting game!

S60 3rd edition, Symbian Signed problems

August 18th, 2006 by Arjan Olsder Posted in Smartphones & Tablets | No Comments »

The Mobile Phone Development Blog reports problems installing Symbian apps and games on operator branded phones from the 3rd edition series 60 devices. Problem is however, it’s not always visible that an operator has branded a phone, meaning consumers will be left in the dark. The problems concern the approval of installation of unsigned software (also known as self-signed). Normally the user will be asked if he allows unsigned software to be installed. In this case however, the user just receives an error message.

Slotland.com announces best gaming phone!?

August 18th, 2006 by Arjan Olsder Posted in Smartphones & Tablets | 6 Comments »

Slotland, known for their web and mobile casino games, announced they have chosen the Motorola Razr as the best device for mobile gaming. The person behind this quote is Martin Smith, mobile games manager at Slotland. The reasons for choosing the Razr? It’s the big screen (176×220 pixels) and because it’s J2me support is the best out there. “and Java is what makes our real-money slot machines work on a phone or PDA” Martin Smith said. Slotland is one of the finalists in the ME Awards for best Mobile Gambling Company. This sounds like a pot to start a discussion on. Which phone would you choose?

In Q3 2006, Nokia will start selling Snap multiplayer games over their Content Discoverer, allowing their publishers access to Nokia’s preinstalled global distribution channel. Nokia already embedded the Content Discoverer portal on nine handsets including models like the N70, N90 and E60. In Q3 and Q4 of 2006 another six handsets will be added to the list.
