T-Mobile UK Launches Terraplay Platform

With mobile gaming communities becoming more and more important for developers to set-up shop outside of operators, it is no news that also operators like to create in-house communities. In the UK, T-Mobile has signed a deal with Terraplay to start hooking up their games platform to allow rental and pay-per-play games alongside their regular downloads. This also allows for in-game purchasing to happen and communities to be built.

Japanese portal hits 2 million registered users

MocoNews reports Mobagetown (mobile games town), a portal in Japan, has reached 2 million registered users of their connected/multiplayer games in just over nine months. The site allows users to chat and blog next to playing games, all under the same account. Mobagetown hereby shows us that building the ultimate mobile games community is no longer just a dream. In Europe we already see guys like Orange Pixel work hard on connecting mobile games (RumbleX).

Kiloo connects with Terraplay

If it’s up to our friends at Kiloo, we will soon all be playing Lego together again as they announced their deal with Terraplay. The connection with Terraplay allows consumers to share highscores, and play multiplayer games. Also Terraplay allows (local) contests and ingame billing, recommendations and other services.

Nokia launches a collection of connected multiplayer casual games for Java enabled handsets

Nokia, the leader in mobile communications, announced today that the launch of its casual games collection for Java-enabled cell phones is expected to occur later this year. The first four titles in the series, all powered by Nokia’s SNAP Mobile service, are Blackjack, Dominoes, Backgammon and Shuffleboard. Nokia believes that the mobile games industry currently has way too many multiplayer and development technologies. If a standard isn’t adopted, the industry will be facing a crisis, says Nokia’s Lisa Waits. Nokia is confident that its SNAP technology is the answer. In fact, they believe it will do for mobile gaming what Windows did for the PC.

Nokia’s N-Gage, as a static console and as a direct competitor with Sony and Nintendo, has been a certifiable sales flop. However, instead of just taking a significant bath from the N-Gage investment, the Finnish company instead used that experience and that foothold to give themselves some very valuable leverage in the mobile space. Success will come in developing for the lowest common denominator

Speaking at the Mobile Entertainment Market expo, Kristian Segerstrale VP of production at Glu Mobile discussed the challenges of developing mobile multiplayer games, an area at present, accounting for just a fraction of the overall mobile gaming market.

Gameloft Defines Future of Mobile Gaming at E3 with 3D Real-Time Multiplayer Games

Gameloft(R), a leading developer and publisher of games for mobile phones, paves the way for the mobile industry with the announcement of exclusive real-time multiplayer 3D games. Real-time multiplayer will be demonstrated at Gameloft’s booth #2460 in the West Hall at the Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3) from May 18-20th.
