According to research firm Canalys, Apple has generated so many sales with their iPhone, that they acquired the third place of the world’s biggest Smartphone vendors.
The marketshare that Apple received is remarkable as the company only has one device in the mobile market today. Also, the sales numbers of Apple are widely discussed as Analysts claim that the sales numbers don’t add up.
Demographics
The sales demographics for the U.S. Are amazing. Apple managed to generate 28% of the total smartphone sales. This is better then all Windows Mobile devices in the same area.
The sales of Smartphones are lead at this moment by Nokia, and there seems to be no reason to see that change on the short term as the distance to the number 2, RIM, is pretty big. During the 4th quarter of 2007, the smartphone market grew 71,9%.
OS
At this moment, Symbian is stall taking the lead when it comes to mobile operating systems om Smartphones. Symbian accounts for 67% of the total market. Windows Mobile takes 13% and RIM’s Blackberry has to settle at 10%. A potential OS is Linux. Though the OS did not do anything special in regards to sales numbers for a lot of time, the LiMo and Android releases will stimulate this platform for sure.
Canalys expects that Apple has a lot of growth potential since their product line holds only one model and because exclusive deals with operators make the potential market for the device smaller.
