While The New iPad launched, it seems Apple also launched a totaly new iPad 2 16GB. During the presentation, Apple said it would remain selling the iPad 2 16GB model next to the New iPad. It didn’t say it had actually improved the iPad 2 hardware in the new 2.4 model.
While the original iPad 2 was running on an A5 CPU baked at 45nm, the new iPad 2.4 model has an A5 CPU baked at 32nm. To avoid consumers knowing what they buy, Apple hasn’t put any form of identification on the box. The only way to know which model you have is by booting it up and launching Geekbench.
So what will the 32nm mean to the user and developer? Nothing when looking at the overall performance of the iPad 2.4. The benefit to the user will be in batterylife. The 32nm chips consume much less power, resulting in about 2 hours longer lifetime. Something that would be dear to many owners of The New iPad.
