Another week, another story about Apple's review policies. This time it is a C64 emulator from Manomio that was being slammed before it could reach the App Store audience.
The project was already halted a few times, but after the developer managed to acquire an official license from Kiloo and Commodore Gaming to sell a C64 emulator, they thought the project would be a guaranteed success. Even Apple had given the project a blessing according to CEO Brian Lyscarz. Yet, this was Apple's answer after the emulator was submitted tot he App Store;
“We've reviewed C64 1.0 and determined that we cannot post this version of your iPhone application to the App Store because it violates the iPhone SDK Agreement; "3.3.2 An Application may not itself install or launch other executable code by any means, including without limitation through the use of a plug-in architecture, calling other frameworks, other APIs or otherwise. No interpreted code may be downloaded and used in an Application except for code that is interpreted and run by Apple's Published APIs and built-in interpreter(s).”
According to Brian Lyscarz, it seems that several big developers created an emulator to release their original roms on the iPhone. One of the examples mentioned was Sega with their Golden Axe and Sonic games.
We wonder where this discussion will go. It Brian is right about Sonic, Apple would have to remove games from one of their biggest publishers.
