March 3rd, 2011 by Arjan Olsder Posted in Platforms: iOS | No Comments »

Apple announced the iPad 2 yesterday. The presence of two camera’s was no big surprise to anyone but the iPad 2 holds some improvements that can have major impact on the development of new apps for the system.

The most important one being the new A5 CPU. A dual-core 1 or 1.2 Ghz processor that seriously boosts performance (nine times according to Apple) for the big screen device. With a special cable, it is also possible to mirror the iPad on an HD TV. Other improvements make the device mainly thinner and lighter. Oh, and it comes in white now.

Talking about the app store, Apple announced it has generated $ 100.000.000 in revenues from 2.500 iBooks. There are currently 200.000.000 iTunes accounts with a credit card attached. Apple paid out over $2.000.000.000 in revenues to developers. Apple also announced it sold over 100.000.000 iPhone’s and over 15.000.000 iPad’s.

The iPad 2 will be sold in primary markets from March 11th onward while secondary markets will get the device on March 25th. In other words, no shortage on supply.

iOS 4.3 will be installed on the iPad 2 and will be available for iPhone and iPod in about a week. iOS 4.3 will bring a wider airplay support as well as wireless hotspot functionality for the iPhone 4.

It is to be expected iOS 5 will be ready when the iPhone 5 launches. It is also to be expected the iPhone 5 and iPod Touch 5 will both get the new A5 CPU installed.
