Apple has acquired the rights to the iPad brand from Fujitsu. Apple’s new toy has the same brand name as a device for Fujitsu which had been sold on the US market. The amount Apple paid is unknown.
The case is similar to that of the iPhone which was a brand from Cisco. In that case, Apple also paid to gain the rights to the brand. In Europe, the iPad trademark is still with the French newspaper La Tribune which registered it on September first 2000. It is a class 9 registration which applies to new technologies like computers, phones etc.
