Andreas Jekl explained the OS strategy of Nokia. While many expect Series 40 to be replaced with Symbian, Nokia will remain building S40 devices for the low-end markets.
Symbian will be the general smartphone platform while MeeGo will be for the ‘Mobile Computers’. This means Nokia has plans to keep Symbian as the leading smartphone platform on a global level. The main competitor seems to be Android as the Android platform keeps growing.
According to research from Techcrunch, smartphones still hold only 14.3% of the market while featurephones still holds 85.7%.According to the United Nations, there is still growth for featurephones in emerging markets.
QT is a free tool (LGPL license), supporting development for Linux/X11, Windows, MacOS, Embedded Linux, Windows CE, MeeGo and Symbian. QT has become popular under Nokia, but many companies have been using it for many years (i.e. Autodesk’s Maya). QT can be deployed from Symbian 3.1 and up. Current phones will be able to upgrade to new Symbian versions to take away some of the fragmentation issues.
