AppCon: Connecting Apps to the Cloud

November 8th, 2010 by Arjan Olsder Posted in Analysis & Editorial | No Comments »

Mike Wharton from Waracle is the first speaker to take turn as the AppCon. His company has been rolling out numerous apps that support cloud based services.

The benefits of cloud based computing have been enormous for developers word-wide and allow them to build entertainment as a service. Whether it is about music services like Spotify or games like World of Warcraft. An additional benefit is that building social games is easy and it allows developers to track exactly what consumers are doing in the games.

SOAP and XML RPC are the most popular methods of connecting to cloud services, but developers are free to build their own protocols over HTTP, JSON etc. Waracle itself built some sort of middleware called Kumulos. Kumulos allows developers to quickly and easy setup their web services and databases.

Next to drag & drop webservice building, Kumulos also allows API generation. It can literally output objective-C code to implement into iPhone projects. Kumulos is built in PHP and will be available on November 19th.
