When I think of Germany, ALDI and LIDL are the first things that come to mind (after beer that is). Those supermarkets have become so successful all over Europe, they are able to sell goods under their own brand. Even smartphones so it seems…
ALDI has been operating their own MVNO in several markets already and have now chosen to start selling their own mobile phones as well. The retailer will be pushing these phones under the ‘Wolfgang’ brand so reinstate the ties with Germany. Two of those phones will be running Android.
The cheapest phone ALDI will sell is selling at €49,99, has a qwerty keyboard and dual-sim. That device will be running some proprietary operating system.
ALDI will also introduce a full touch 2.8” Android smartphone that will be selling at €99,99. The flagship device will however be a 4.3” multi-touch Android smartphone selling at €199,99.
Looking at the buttons of the Android devices, they are likely not to run on ICS, but I do see images reflecting a Google license and thus access to Android Market. We will check back on this later.
