ABI: App Store Generated 5.6 Billion Downloads

March 11th, 2011 by Arjan Olsder Posted in Research & Stats | No Comments »

According to a report from ABI Research, Apple’s App Store has generated 5.6 billion downloads in 2010. With this number of downloads, it is safe to say Apple is the biggest player yet.

Apple generated 70.9% of all app downloads. Android ranks second with 1.9 billion downloads shared between Android Market and other app stores. Since the launch, BlackBerry App World generated 1 billion downloads. ABI expects Apple’s share to slim down in 2011.

ABI Research’s mobile marketing practice director, Neil Strother adds, “More mobile network operators are also considering entry into the mobile application market; India’s Idea Cellular, for example, just launched its Online Application Store shortly in advance of its 3G network launch.” Multi-platform-supported app store GetJar has just raised $25 million for futher expansion in a recent announcement, and plans to secure its position as the premier open-source app store.”
