EU: Cheap Internet and Standards for Mobile Payments

July 10th, 2009 by Arjan Olsder Posted in Other news | No Comments »

Europe EU commissioner Viviane Reding has announced plans that should reduce data costs for mobile internet in Europe and introduce a central system for processing mobile payments.

By lowering data plans, the EU hopes to stimulate more consumers to go online with their mobile phones. This also benefits the mobile entertainment industry as consumers will be more likely to buy virtual products.

By introducing a central mobile billing system, the EU hopes to stimulate mobile payments for both online and offline shopping. One system will mean lower development costs for portal owners and probably also more competition in handling charges.
