Following the demise of the netbook, the tablet seems to be wiping out the eReader market as well. Though tablets are a true horror to the retina when reading books, the benefit of being able to read in colour and read on a device purchased for all sorts of entertainment seems to go above purchasing a dedicated reading gadget.
E Ink, the company behind the screens in many of the popular eReaders, has just reported its first loss following 10 successful quarters. The company lost $27 million in the first quarter of this year. Total revenues went down 63%. The company says the loss comes from off-season effects and inventory adjustments at clients.
The massive loss of revenues predicts a shift from consumers to cheap tablets that will not only satisfy their reading needs, but allows them to have some Angry Birds fun as well for only a few euro’s more. There have been eReaders with E Ink displays that were capable of running apps, but the refresh rates and lack of colour in E Ink displays is what gives them a great energy efficiency, but provides true in-game horror.
