You put a full colour e-reader on the market and just as you think everybody will start reading in full colour, consumers turn out to use it for what it is, a tablet. Still it is nothing for Barnes & Noble to worry about as apps turn out to be great business to them.
Barnes & Noble CEO William Lynch notified investors that apps are the fastes growing area of content to the traditional bookseller. Angry Birds is still taking the lead on the Nook Tablet, followed by Netflix.
Surprisingly, consumers that buy Nook’s, also spend more on printed editions. This makes me wonder what the numbers are for the Nook Tablet vs. the real Nook e-readers. I still deem it highly unlikely one would prefer the colour screen over e-Ink.
When it comes to upgraded hardware, it seems Barnes & Noble isn’t looking at ‘just’ bigger screens and faster CPU’s. There will be follow-ups, but the company is looking at how it can innovate in areas where it can add value to the business.
The current 8GB Nook Tablet is priced $199, competitive to the Kindle Fire from Amazon.
Congratulations
