Nokia World: The Ovi Files

September 7th, 2009 by Arjan Olsder Posted in Distribution | No Comments »

Nokia The Nokia World event last week didn't go unnoticed as our mailbox was stuffed with interesting details coming from the event. One of the most important is what is happening with Ovi.

Let's kick off with some stats. At this moment, the average Ovi user downloads six apps. Ovi has 1.7 million users in total, so that's 10.2 million downloads in total since May 26th. This is nice, but how many where paid downloads? 60% are returning downloaders. This means that 40% is disappointed in the service or the content on it.

If we erase that 40% on one download average, it means the active consumers are probably downloading 9.3 titles each from a selection of 5.000 titles. August was a good month for Ovi as it generated 2.5x more signups then June and July combined.

To stimulate downloads and signups, Nokia will soon allow developers to start sell try & buy versions of their mobile games. Nokia was already trying this model with a small selection of games on Ovi. Nokia is also considering the introduction of subscription based billing. In-game billing was not discussed though.
