Digital Chocolate has generated 40 million downloads on the App Store and celebrated it with a blog post on how well their mobile games are discovered on Apple’s store.
One of the findings of DC is that when users input a single digit in the search field, there is a 20% chance a Digital Chocolate game will be featured in the results. According to the company this is purely because of the number of downloads they generated. They even got #1 spots on the letters D and H.
Though some might think of such a post as pure bragging, there is a hidden message in it as well. If this is true, Apple uses downloads as an important metric for the search results and that’s harder to trick with SEO.
So the App Store search results might be harder to trick with SEO, but if the number of downloads is the main factor, then that also means it’s harder for new developers’ apps to be found and harder for them to become successful in the App Store.
