October 19th, 2010 by Arjan Olsder Posted in Platforms: iOS | No Comments »

On September first, Steve Jobs announced the App Store passed a quarter million apps. Yesterday, the App Store broke through 300K apps. In other words, 50.000 new apps in about six weeks!

The data comes from analyst Mobclix, which also opened up their stats on apps that have been wiped off the App Store, more than 42.000 apps to date. Of all apps that are removed from the App Store, books hold the highest percentage. In total, Apple threw out 6.193 apps from the books category. From Entertainment, another 5.099 books have been removed. The third most popular category to get kicked out off is utilities with 2.174 apps being booted out. According to MobClix data, most apps have been kicked out in July 2010 but Apple removes 4~5K apps every month.

Looking at the metrics of 148apps.com, who also tracks the number of apps on the App Store, we see that the books category holds 17% of all apps on the app store and so, is the biggest category on there. Entertainment is the third biggest category, having 11% marketshare. Utilities have only a 6% marketshare. 30.95% of all apps on the App Store are available for free.
