Round 3 for Digital Chocolate brings $ 18 Million

July 18th, 2006 by Arjan Olsder Posted in Companies & M&A | 6 Comments »

In it’s latest funding round, Digital Chocolate has secured $ 18 Million worth of investments. More early, Digital Chocolate managed to raise $ 22 Million of VC funding since it’s start in 2003. Trip Hawkins announced that Digital Chocolate will keep focusing on creating high quality unbranded games rather then branded ones. Trip estimates his company has a 11% marketshare and will become profitable in the next year.

Unbranded games are a great way to go but it must be difficult to get around the walled garden issue.
If somebody is going to purchase a game off of a game deck and the game is called “Tower Bloxx” or “Paris Hilton’s Diamond Quest”, it is obvious which one the average person will choose.
Trip is going to have to come up with some inventive ways of circumventing the carriers in order to get the games out there.
Glu has done some new things such as putting full print ads for their new game Super KO boxing. Perhaps this will be a new trend in the industry.

On a wapdeck it’s true for sure, specially with operators like “3” that charge still per click on their own portals.
However on a web deck (where we know less sales take place), artwork is one of the sellingpoints and people take more time browsing the portal.
So it’s also a matter of technology. When broadband on mobile picks up, users get more images shown and will start considering those more.
