Sun; J2me to JavaSE in 10 Years

SunJames Gosling, VP of Sun, announced that the company is focussing to abandon the J2me standard in the coming years in order to exchange it for an overall Java SE environment.

"We’re trying to converge everything to the JavaSE specification. Cell phones and TV set-top boxes are growing up, That convergence is going to take years." said James Gosling.

James is pointing already to their JavaFX platform which has basically everything JavaSE except for some elements like Cobra. With the speed in which mobile phones are maturing and getting more and more powerful, James Gosling hopes to have every (mobile) device running JavaSE in about 10 years. The switch to JavaSE would also mean the potential annihilation of today’s porting industry as the codebase is similar over all devices.
