Mitsubishi Electric Exits Device Market

March 3rd, 2008 by Arjan Olsder Posted in Smartphones & Tablets | No Comments »

MitsubishielectricThough Mitsubishi only released mobile phones on the Japanese market for many years, the company has chosen to stop further development as device sales are expected to slow down in their market.

The stagnation in growth is coming from the decreasing population in Japan. Currently there are 127 million consumers and 100 million phones are on the market already. Operating on the market next to Mitsubishi are Sharp, Panasonic, Fujitsu and Toshiba. Also Nokia and Samsung seem to gain a lot of marketshare.

Another step that is leading to a decrease in market demand for mobile phones is the fact that NTT DoCoMo, the biggest Japanese operator, has slimmed down the subsidies given out on new subscriptions. Consumers are charged less for the services consumed in return.

Mitsubishi is not the first company in this market to quit the production of mobile phones. Earlier this year, Sanyo also announced to seize device development. Sanyo sold their mobile phone division to Kyocera.
