Nttdocomo
NTT Docomo has presented a small research amongst 900 of their mobile
gaming service consumers in regards to when they play. Half of this
group was below 16 years of age and the group was equally divided in
girls and boys.

This research (which was not about the amount of games purchased) clearly shows that girls are more active in playing mobile games as 59% reports to play more then four times a week in comparison to 51% of the male public.

The most popular game time is during travel with 40% of the overall gaming time. 16% of the males play at home compared to 36% of the girls. Before going to bed, 17% of the girls love to play a game while the males are at only 5%. When looking at the types of games, males prefer shooters and sports while girls prefer puzzle and training based games.

This study clearly shows that at least in Japan, mobile gaming is dominated by girls.
